Fix the no-mic problem with the Baofeng UV5R+

Mar 25 2015

The Problem

In general I am very satisfied with my Baofeng UV5R+. The performance is reasonably well (for the price) and if you are proud owner of a programming cable then you can configure it to fit your needs. However - last summer I discovered that my device suddenly stopped working. The carrier wave was there, but there was no modulation.

The Solution

After googling around I found an youtube video that shows how to fix the problem.

Here are a few images from my repair:

The repair doesn't cost a cent and takes less than 10 minutes, but it has one downside:

Whenever you press the transmit button then the sum of the internal microphone signal and an (optionally attached) external phone is transmitted.

This may not be a problem if you just use the device as a hand-held radio, but in my case (where I operated it together with mobilinkd as an APRS receiver / transmitter) most of my sent APRS messages where lost when i operated the assembly in a loud environment.
